30 years later, i still consider this as one of my favorite records. records like this make it difficult for any band to live up to their fans' expectations.

spoons - nova heart
wasn't made aware of this band / track until the very late 1990's, and it made me wish i could relive the 1980's all over again.
how can we (in the US) be so close to canada, yet so unaware of what they have (had)?

not so super 8
super 8 = ET(goonies + war of the worlds)
super 8 is perfectly okay, at times funny, at other times interesting, but at no time unique or original. there's no JJ abrams here; it's all spielberg. bad, 70's era cliche spielberg.
in fact, i'd be hardpressed to come up with any one thing original about this movie...maybe there was no intent to be.
i'm guessing that this is the second cloverfield movie, and that the next one will be a hitchcock-themed mystery, the one after that, based on the muppets, and who knows where from there?

diversions
just this and that from today...
- working at a different office, 100 miles from home, this week.
- going around saying hi to folks i work with on instant messenger and the phone; fully half don't recognize by name, i have to tell them how we know each other.
- chit-chatted with a guy i was in a 2-month training with a year ago, and whom i talk to almost weekly. after mentioning my great weight loss, he says to me as i'm walking away, "nice to meet you."
- hotel living: missing the husband and the monsters.
- on the news, anthony weiner's "weinergate" admission / press conference: commentators complain that this story gets too much coverage while devoting their full program's time to covering this story.
- hotel living: i hate touching any switch or button or knob in this room.
- hotel living: this bed and pillows give me a neckache.
- hotel living: at least i was bored enough to go out for a jog tonight.

blondie - d-day
blondie's panic of girls has finally been released, and the standout track, "d-day", opens the album brilliantly.
about as "punk" as anything gets on the album, with a tuba-riffic bass line...not sure anything else on the album lives up to that track, but there are more gems along the way. here's a surprise: no rap song! (well, "girlie girlie," maybe.)
lots of caribbean influence...too much with 4 of 11 tracks total...but plenty of other styles are represented, in typical blondie fashion. the french number, "le bleu," has quickly become a favorite for me, as is the beirut cover, "sunday smile".
what makes an impression on the first few listens: the keyboards seem...dated? unsophisticated? the goose-honking keyboards on "what i heard" sink an otherwise perfect pop song, with a refreshingly non-sentimental take on an adult relationship.
casual fans may not love this album, outside of "what i heard", "mother", and "love doesn't bother me"; but fans of debbie's voice will love it, start to finish.
