PAUL

i suppose i should have written up a glowing review after seeing PAUL this past weekend, but surprisingly, as much as i enjoyed seeing it at the time, i haven't cared enough about it to follow up.

it was amusing. it was funny. a sweet, cuss-filled homage to sci-fi blockbusters from 30+ years ago, specifically E.T. and close encounters of the third kind with a few others tossed in.

two british guys do a road trip across the western U.S. to see alien-themed sites (roswell, area 51, comicon), and pick up an escaping alien, and an unborn again christian along the way. while being hunted down by jason bateman. what's not to like about all that? but, not the hilarity of shaun of the dead, from whom this movie also comes...still, well worth seeing.

one wonders how much they spent just creating the alien guy, though he was worth the investment...really well crafted. kristen wiig remains the most remarkable comic actor of this era; jason bateman keeps the chase moving along.

(related kristen wiig news: they showed a trailer for her upcoming movie, bridesmaid, that, for her alone, will be on my list.)

alphaville - song for no one

imagine falling to earth from your heavenly carousel, getting hauled across the land by a WWII fighter plane, only to scale metropolis staircases lined by corset bound leather daddies.

or, simply watch alphaville's new video for "song for no one", found only at their web site for now.

http://www.alphaville.info/

the second single from their album, catching rays on giant, which is fairly awesome.

1 girl 5 gays

anybody else watching i girl 5 gays? (mtv canada / logo tv in the US)

very charming host girl asks five 20-something guys "20 questions about love and sex". their answers, though often idealistic, are refreshingly honest (with the exception of a panelist or two who haven't given an honest answer in any episode they sat)...at least, as honest as one might expect from this crowd.

the panelists change from week to week (more or less frequently, perhaps...i wouldn't know as i've seen these probably out of chronological sequence), so the viewer doesn't get turned off by some of the more overbearing guys.

the show is rarely salacious, even when the questions get fairly intimate. and it's surprising how appealing some of the panelists become after watching for a few episodes...based entirely on their answers. (not surprisingly, some become even less attractive, based entirely on their answers.)

i only wonder how awful this show would be if it were produced here in the states, where tv today is only about yelling and getting drunk on tv. it would be interesting, though, to try a panel of older, experienced gays, who could speak from experience...not "would you ever", but "have you ever".

the cars - sad song

again, no surprises here. and that's absolutely, perfectly acceptable.

looking forward to this new album.

i am noxious - flashback tears

why is this guy's music not available in the US? i won't go into my music-has-no-geographies-anymore tirade again. still...

all happy keyboards and drowsy vocals makes for instantly accessible pop that doesn't tire.

(sorry, no link to purchasing his music, because i don't live in denmark, so i'm not supposed to know about him.)

R.E.M. - Every Day Is Yours To Win

i haven't found myself to be a rabid fan of R.E.M., but they've had a record out every here and there that i found irresistible. and today, they have another, "every day is yours to win".

R.E.M. "Every Day Is Yours To Win" from Matthew Perpetua on Vimeo.

gorgeous? yes, it is.

(gracias, fluxblog for the link.)

watching big love

HBO's big love started out as an amusement and little more. the characters were somewhat charming, all the mormonspeak, though initially jabbing my eardrums with repressedmemoryhorror, became cute and endearing.

didn't i love watching margene smile whenever someone tossed a little compliment her way? didn't i laugh when we found out just-out-of-the-compound nicolette ran up thousands thousands in credit? didn't i relate with so much of what barb related of her growing up in that mormon mentality? and didn't bill remind me of so many men, too full of the promise of priesthood that they didn't realize what foolish things they pronounced?

i did.

but now, this final season, we suddenly see bill as a polygamy-proud state senator, with his family and associates being hunted down (literally) all around him, and the conflicts with everything and everyone i used to think made quirky family drama now just seem trivial, because this season, this all got heavy and intense and terrifying.

it's been sad watching lois (bill's mom) go the way of dementia (thanks a lot, bruce dern!), but it's all the more sweet when she has coherent moments.

and suddenly, i think i'm actually going to miss this show...and mary kay place couldn't have appeared often enough.

the adjustment bureau

matt damon isn't allowed to love a dull girl he met in the mens room. another movie based on a phillip k dick story (who wrote blade runner and just about every other science fiction movie in the past 25 years). when i saw the trailer on this one, i wasn't terribly enthusiastic. seemed this "bureau" that manages our affairs was fairly petty.

watching the development of the story during the movie itself, i was feeling pretty much the same; i kept internally screaming, "yeah, but WHY?" and when the "WHY" that these two dull people aren't allowed to be in love was totally not worth the wait.

wondering exactly how old matt damon's character was supposed to be, because it's said that his dad took him to see JFK in washington DC. let's assume he was about 10 years old then...so now, 50 years later, he still looks 40?

still, the movie was otherwise entertaining, and i wouldn't tell people NOT to see it.

black anniversary

the quietus writes about the 25th anniversary of depeche mode's black celebration.

a great album that i still listen to fairly frequently.

the sound of arrows - nova

i'm really liking this band, but i'm not sure yet about this new track yet. it's more shrieky-clubby than what i heard from them last year. but their visual sense is still pretty remarkable.

if you need a reminder on loving these guys, go back to this one:
